SPlayer - Simple and Powerful App Reviews

A good fork

I discovered SPlayerX while looking for an alternative to MPlayerX. MPlayerX abandoned the Mac App Store because they felt the sandboxing requirements Apple imposed were too strict and the installer on their website now bundles crapware making that project something I cannot recommend to anyone. SPlayerX fills that void. It is a fork of MPlayerX (not a copycat), which makes this a GPLv2 piece of software. It is a continuation of MPlayerX by another developer. In spite of some peoples misconceptions, it is appropriate to sell compiled programs under GPLv2 so long as the developer still makes the source code available which the author does on bitbucket. The only item of debatable ethics here is whether its appropriate to distribute GPL programs on the Mac App Store, a debate Im content ignoring. For anyone curious about external subtitle situation. Its not supported and probably never will be. Thats a Mac App Store restriction and nothing the developer can do anything about. Overall, Im pleased with the developers here deciding to charge a small amount of money to fund work on this MPlayerX fork. Id rather pay a dollar than have the installer try and push crapware on me.

The best player

This is the best Player I’ve had! It played all kinds of movies I have tried so far. No crashes. No issues… It worth it. it was a really good purchase!

LOVE THIS PLAYER!!

I was having an issue playing certain files with Quicktime and this app allowed me to play any file in great quality!! definitley reccommend for playing videos :)

I want my money back

This is a messed up copy of MplayerX!! It can’t go fullscreen without blocking all my other apps, the video is pixelated as hell and there’s the annoying “visit my sub translating website” ad on my screen! I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

Surprise and Amazing to me

give me big suprise apps,. for me.,. Im looking lots of video player software.,., for playing my TS file video.,. finally.,..I got this one worth to keep.,., cuz,. i can change audio (japanese or English or Chinese audio) or display subtitle,.,. and the best one is just only 170Yen(japanese dollars).,., worth to uSe.,.,.

subtitle-audio

there is no way to put .str files to movies and the program doesnt select the correct output with optical connections which you have to make that MANUALLY.

Great!

Very good player. It plays all types of files what QTP or DivX cant play/ask download sound codecs itc.

Very good!!!

Thanks!

SPlayerX 1.1.4

Picture is good enough!

Dont buy untill after pro apps codecs mplayer lib fix statement appear

Been my favourite player for movies till recently updated apple Pro Apps codecs. From that moment wont play anything, but QT compatible, which makes it useless cause only bought because of interface simplicity, but Apple QT player is the same. Although its clear, that updated Pro codecs ruined something so neither this app nor MplayerX work anymore (i guess, both share the same mplayer underlying code), the Movist player works just fine, so the problem is obviously to be fixed on the app (underlying libs) side – thats why one star only! Please, have this fixed and ill review my feedback to positive.

pixel image in movies

Guys after updating to El Capitan almost all the movies I watch with SPlayerX have pixel image. It’s not pleasant at all to watch movies with this issue. Please fix it.

its time to update!!!

come on, its like been years!! it has some problems, try to fix them!!! you cannot just get the money and run away…

Smart Subtitle

Smart subtitling is the only reason why I bought this as it worked pefectly fine. However, it’s been directing the page to the app store. Regretting buying this on the app store.

Love this app!

Great app and very easy to use. This is the only video player app that I can trust.

Bad picture quality

Seems like it could be a nice player, but on the two movies Ive tried it on, the picture quality is much worse than Movist. Looks like a misapplied filter or something. If that problem was fixed, this looks very promising.

No automatic subtitle matching.

I thought this mac version of SPlayer should have the same automatic subtitle matching function it has on windows version but unfortunately it does NOT. Just a heads up for anyone who wants it to perform how it works on windows. Other than that, it is just a normal media player, nothing special.

Doesn’t work at all.

I got some pretty big movie wmv files to play on this player, with the hope that finally I could enjoy the movies, it turned out that the videos just appear as weird colored blocks on this player. Besides the graphics, you then hear a crazy loud sound that breaks your ears even though I set the volume to 10%. It doesn’t work at all, and what’s worse is it’s not free.

no blu-ray

doesn’t play Blu-ray from the discription I thought it would. I can’t speak to any thing else.

Great!

Used this app for quite a while now and its perfect! Im running Mavericks OS

Stable and fast

Great app. Compared with MPlayerX, its advantage is loading subtitles smartly, and its disadvantage is that for some files MPlayerX might opens a little bit faster. But both runs pretty smoothly.
